The British Alpaca Society.
A Standard to work for...
The majority of alpaca owners and breeders are members of the British Alpaca Society which effectively forms the governing body for the National Herd. The National Herd is registered with the B.A.S who are a democratically elected body who voluntarily administer the following on behalf of the membership:
- The Pedigree Registry. This is the national register of all the alpacas in the country, the herd location, pedigree and ownership. Alpaca breeders are able to use this resource to check bloodlines, breeding records and make informed mating decisions based on sound information and established pedigree.
- The Breeders Directory. An up to date directory of all the alpaca breeders in the country with a brief precis of their location and services.
- "The Alpaca" Magazine. The society's quarterly magazine which is a professionally produced magazine free to all members of the BAS.
- National and Regional Show Classes: The society organises alpaca halter and fleece shows throughout the UK providing classes in all categories and a fine opportunity for breeders large and small to show their animals to each other and the public at large.
- Education: Judge training, Fleece workshops and husbandry courses. The society organises various educational workshops throughout the UK to increase the skills and knowledge of the membership.
- Import Screening Procedures: The society adinisters these procedures to ensure that allimported alpacas to the Uk acheive a minimum standard of confromation, fleece quality and welfare. Passing screening allows imported alpacas to be registered on the national register once imported to the UK.
- Regional Support Structure. The society has established through the membership regional self helps groups throughout the UK which meet on a regular basis to share knowledge and expertise in all things alpaca.
- Welfare Support Structure: for the protection of the Alpaca. The Society works with numerous animal welfare bodies to operate a fast response service for any alpacas which are suffering neglect.
- Marketing & Promotion: The society provides a focus for promotion of Alpaca to the general public through media and marketing and organizing and promoting various exhibitions at regional and national agricultural shows to raise the profile of this wondrous animal.
